Music Streaming – The Future of DJing
In terms of where a DJ gets their music from, is Music Streaming the future for Djs?
Over the years, Music media has evolved for the Dj. The ’70s brought record players and mixers. Then the early nineties with CDs and CDjs became the club standard, and then the early 2000s brought Scratch Live which allowed the ability to play digital music from laptops.
Like in the past, are we in another evolution phase, where music streaming will be the new club standard for all DJs?
Music streaming
Spotify, iTunes music and Tidal have been big players in the music streaming space. These services have helped streaming grow into the norm of which each platform have over 50 million users. Streaming has revolutionised the way that a majority of us consume music. By paying a subscription and gaining instant access to almost every song by artists all over the world. Music Streaming could be the new norm for the way DJs gather music and play songs for their sets.
DJ software
DJ Companies have started to allow integration between their DJ software and music streaming services. The integration enables a DJ to sign into their streaming account and have access to a vast catalogue of music and playlist without having to take up any hard disk this space on their laptops. Let us take a look into each company’s software and how they and enable the feature of streaming and with what service.
Serato DJ
Serato has full integration with Tidal. The combination gives the ability to follow Serato playlist in Tidals, Create playlist in tidal and search Tidal within Serato DJ. When loading a Tidal track to the deck, it will analyse and apply beat grids, Bpm and key information to the file which will be stored on your computer.
Rekordbox
Rekordbox currently has integration with Soundcloud Go and Beatport. However, as of version 6 of Rekordbox, they now have inclusions with Beatsource LINK. Beatsource is a collaboration project between Beatport and Dj City which caters to the open-format Dj community to buy music. This integration not only allows searching and playlist but also gives beatsauce link subscribers to create a playlist on Beatsauce and have them appear ready to play on Reckordbox.
Djay Pro
Djay Pro has been known for allowing streaming services earlier than any other software. With the latest update, they have stopped integration with Spotify; however, they have allowed other options with the introduction of the 2.0 streaming. Algoriddim partners with TIDAL, SoundCloud, Beatport and Beatsource to provide djay users enhanced music service options and to take streaming in djay to a new level. They have also enabled video streaming from tidal in this update. This gives VDJ a vast amount of videos which they can then use in their sets without taking up any hard disk space. They can also use footage and place different audio on top of the video to create a unique set.
Engine Prime
While Denon’s Engine Prime does offer TIDAL, SoundCloud, Beatport and Beatsource. They have a gone above their competition by being the world first to allow streaming on standalone hardware.
Engine Prime as of release 1.4 allows hardware to connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi which enables a DJ to access their tidal account. This integrator allows all tidal content, including playlists favourite songs and albums and artists to be accessible via the hardware. The player will then download the tracks analyse and will enable you to add key points to the songs which then can be saved to your profile.
Virtual DJ
Virtual DJ not only allows DJs to sign into their SoundCloud, Beatsouce, Beatport or Deezer account the DJ software also has their own online platform which users can sign up for. They have three different choices of subscriptions
Music – all popular songs each with various remixes
Karaoke – access to thousand professional karaoke videos
Video – high-res and high-quality promotional videos
